GPC Geiriadur Welsh Dictionary 1.4

The Mae ap GPC provides access to the comprehensive data of the Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru, a Welsh dictionary comparable in scope to the Oxford English Dictionary. Unlike the online version (gpc.cymru), this application allows users to download the entire dictionary content for offline use, eliminating the need for an internet connection during consultation. Each Welsh word is defined with English synonyms and illustrative quotations from various periods, alongside detailed etymological information and grammatical data such as gender and plural forms of nouns.

Key features include:

• 124,500 headwords
• 7,150 variant forms
• 34,400 collocations (phrases)
• 475,000 illustrative quotations with source references
• Over 60,000 cross-references

The dictionary entries—headwords, variants, and collocations—can be searched by word or phrase. Input is streamlined by disregarding accents, numerals, and apostrophes, which simplifies searching and presents all matching results for selection. If the app cannot find an exact match, it proposes similar words based on fuzzy matching algorithms. Automatic recognition of inflected (mutated) forms enhances search efficiency.

Advanced search options include wildcards (‘*’, ‘?’, ‘+’), applicable to both Welsh and English synonyms. Searches can be performed online or offline; downloading the full dataset (approximately 185MB) via WiFi allows for independent use without an internet connection. If storage space is limited, users may opt for a reduced version excluding quotations (about 132MB).

The application incorporates two word games—anagrams and hidden words—using definitions from the dictionary as clues. Users can restrict game content to their recent searches, a feature particularly beneficial for learners practicing new vocabulary.

An integrated ‘Help’ section answers common questions and provides further guidance. The development of this application was supported with financial aid from the Welsh Government.
